“Director Cathy Koncurat has really put her stamp on the production, sliding things into that speakeasy era and letting subtle moments really catch the eyes of the audience\u2014 like having Hades play live trombone at times (and Daniel Koncurat is a rather impressive trombone player to boot) or constantly having the Fates in perpetual states of \u2018RRF\u2019 (Resting\u2026Rage Face.) Having the chorus never truly lift their eyes or faces when they\u2019re chanting is such a powerful statement choice that really resonates with the song\u2019s subject matter, it sticks with you long after you leave the performance. You get this hitting home particularly hard during \u201cWhy We Build the Wall\u201d and it\u2019s deliciously unnerving. The overall tonal shift that Koncurat achieves (working in tandem with the rest of the production team) as Orpheus rolls into \u201cWait for Me\u201d and again with \u201cDoubt Comes In\u201d is spine-tingling. And there is a moment of sheer goosebumps and clinging to the edge of your seat just as the end of \u201cEpic III\u201d that will sit with you through to the end of the show as well. Theaterworks Live has something extraordinarily special with this production of\u00a0Hadestown\u00a0(Teen Edition) it\u2019s exquisite, it\u2019s rare, and it\u2019s beautiful. ”\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What makes this production of\u00a0Footloose\u00a0a step above is Cathy Koncurat\u2019s direction (with massive assists from Stage Manager Kody Coudon and ASM Peter Lein.) There\u2019s intentional character work, raw emotions, and an overall sense of understanding being taught to these young performers and not just the principals. Lots of folks can sing and dance, some of them can even act, but these kids at Theatreworks Live really seem to understand the show\u2014 a rarity for some of these \u2018older\u2019 shows nowadays. They\u2019re doing impressive work up in Harford County; don\u2019t miss them!”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Sound of Music Director Phoenix Festival Theater “The pacing in a seemingly endless Rogers & Hammerstein show is critical. Director Cathy Koncurat runs a tight ship with Stage Manager Kody Coudon as her first mate. There\u2019s hardly ever any darkness or standing still, one scene flows fluidly and seamlessly into the next, curtains and flies operating with ease and expedience. This really helps keeps the focus on the action and the beautiful music of the show. Koncurat has delicately sprinkled little moments in the production as well\u2014 like the postulants and novices tittering their way to see Maria in her wedding dress, with some of the more senior nuns standing by in solemn judgement\u2026only to have the more senior nuns start tittering and giggling once the younger nuns are out of earshot. There\u2019s also the striking moment when Maria flees back to the Abbey- and intentionally leaves her guitar behind in the von Trapp household.
